What are Doorway Pages in SEO?

Some SEO tactics bring a short burst of traffic and then cause lasting damage. Doorway pages are one of them.

They are especially tempting for businesses that serve many cities: create one page per city, change the city name, and hope to rank everywhere. In this article, we explain what doorway pages are, how Google's current policies treat them, and how to build location pages that actually help.

What are Doorway Pages?

1. Definition:

  • Doorway pages, also called gateway, bridge or portal pages, are pages or sites created to rank for specific, similar search queries. They act as an entrance that funnels visitors to another destination and offer little value of their own. Google calls this doorway abuse: "when sites or pages are created to rank for specific, similar search queries" (Google spam policies).

2. Characteristics:

  • Thin Content: Little or no original content; the page exists mainly to push visitors somewhere else.
  • Near-Duplicate Pages: Many pages share the same text, with only a keyword or city name swapped.
  • Multiple URLs or Domains: Several pages or even separate domains target variations of one query and all lead to the same place.
  • Isolated from Navigation: The pages exist for search engines and are hard or impossible to reach from your site's normal menus.
  • Poor User Experience: Visitors get a generic page and have to click again to find what they wanted.

3. Examples Google gives:

  • Having multiple websites with slight variations to the URL and home page to maximize reach for a specific query.
  • Having multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page.
  • Pages generated to funnel visitors into the actually usable or relevant part of your site.
  • Substantially similar pages that are closer to search results than a clearly defined, browsable hierarchy.

Why Doorway Pages are Harmful to SEO

1. Violates Google's Spam Policies: What used to be called Google's "Webmaster Guidelines" is now Google Search Essentials. Doorway abuse is listed in its spam policies, and Google says violating sites "may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all." Serious cases can also receive a manual action in Search Console.

2. Diminishes User Trust: People who land on a generic page instead of the answer they searched for leave quickly and remember the bad experience.

3. Wastes Crawling and Maintenance Effort: Hundreds of near-identical pages give search engines more low-value URLs to process. For most small sites, crawl budget itself is not a real constraint: Google says it mainly matters for very large sites, such as those with 1 million+ pages changing weekly (Google). The bigger cost is quality: thin pages drag down how your site is seen overall and are a burden to keep updated.

4. Impacts Site Authority: Search engines aim to rank trustworthy sites. A pattern of manipulative pages can harm how your whole site is assessed, not only the doorway pages.

5. Unfair to Users and Competitors: Doorway pages try to win visibility by volume instead of usefulness. That is why Google treats them as spam, and why ethical SEO providers avoid them.

Doorway pages, scaled content and city landing pages

Google tightened its rules in March 2024. That update folded the helpful content system into core ranking and added a scaled content abuse policy, alongside policies on expired domain abuse and site reputation abuse (Google Search Central Blog).

Scaled content abuse covers generating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings, whether by AI tools, scraping or templates, without adding value for users. Mass-produced city pages can fall under both doorway abuse and scaled content abuse.

This does not mean location pages are banned. A business with real branches or service areas can have a page for each one. The difference is value:

  • Doorway-style page: "Plumbing services in Mardan" with the same 300 words as every other city page and a different city name.
  • Useful location page: The local address or service area, local phone or WhatsApp number, working hours, team or technicians, photos, reviews from customers in that area, and details that are genuinely different, such as delivery times or local projects.

If you can't write something unique and useful for a location, one strong service page with a clear list of the areas you serve is usually the better choice. For more on the basics, see what is local SEO.

How to Avoid and Correct Doorway Pages

1. Focus on Quality Content: Make sure every page offers unique, useful content that stands on its own for the visitor.

2. Optimize Naturally: Avoid keyword stuffing and swapped-keyword templates. Write for the reader, then check that key terms appear naturally.

3. Consolidate Similar Pages: Merge near-duplicate pages into one comprehensive page. Use 301 redirects from the old URLs so visitors and link value reach the new page.

4. Monitor and Audit Regularly: Run regular website audits to find thin or duplicate content. Check Google Search Console for manual actions and for pages marked as duplicates.

5. Provide Genuine Value: Make every page reachable through normal navigation and helpful on its own, with clear information and an easy next step.

6. Request Reconsideration if Penalized: If you received a manual action, fix or remove all affected pages first, then submit a reconsideration request explaining what you changed.

Conclusion on What are Doorway Pages in SEO

Doorway pages try to rank through volume rather than value. Google's spam policies treat them as doorway abuse, and mass-produced pages can also count as scaled content abuse.

Build fewer, better pages. Location pages are fine when each one gives local visitors real, specific information.
