How to Get an IT Internship in Pakistan: A Guide for BS CS/IT Students
How BS CS and IT students in Pakistan find internships: where they come from, paid vs unpaid, a CV and GitHub that get replies, interviews and your first weeks.

Table of Contents
Most BS Computer Science and IT students in Pakistan start looking for an internship in the sixth or seventh semester, send the same CV to twenty email addresses, and hear nothing back. It feels like there are no internships. Usually there are; the application just never gave anyone a reason to reply.
An internship is often the difference between a degree and a first job. It gives you something real to talk about in interviews, a reference who has seen you work, and a sense of which kind of IT work you actually enjoy.
This guide covers where IT internships in Pakistan come from, how to tell a useful unpaid internship from a waste of time, what to put in your CV and GitHub, how to apply and follow up, what interviews look like, and what to do once you are in. There is a section for students in Mardan at the end.
Where IT internships in Pakistan come from
IT internships come from four places, and most students only use the first one.
Your university
Your department and its career or placement office hear from employers first. Ask your coordinator which companies took interns from your department in the last two years, and whether there is an internship credit or required summer placement in your scheme of studies. Teachers who supervise final-year projects are also well connected: a good FYP is often how a company first notices a student.
Software houses and IT companies
This is where most IT internships actually are. Small and mid-sized software houses take interns because they need help and want to hire people they have already trained. Many never advertise; they hire whoever shows up with proof of work at the right moment. Make a list of companies in your city and the nearest larger city, and read their careers pages. If you are in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, our article on what to expect from a software house in Mardan explains how these firms work day to day.
Government programmes
The Pakistan Software Export Board ran an ICT Internship Program that placed fresh graduates in IT companies, with 2,700 interns in its first phase from May 2021, and says the programme is set to restart (PSEB). Check that page for the current phase before counting on it.
Two free training programmes are useful alongside an internship search rather than instead of one: DigiSkills.pk, run for the Ministry of IT & Telecom by the Virtual University, and NAVTTC, which runs free skills programmes for young people. A certificate from either will not get you hired alone, but the skills can fill gaps in your CV.
Remote and online internships
Some companies take remote interns, especially for web, design and marketing work. Treat these with more care: a real remote internship has a named company, a supervisor and a defined task. If anyone asks you to pay a "registration fee" for an internship, walk away.
Paid vs unpaid internships
Paid internships exist in Pakistan, and some government programmes have shared the cost with companies, but many internships are unpaid or pay a small stipend. Whether an internship is paid matters less in the first one than what you learn and who will vouch for you afterwards.
| Question | A useful internship | A waste of time |
|---|---|---|
| Who supervises you? | A named developer who reviews your work | Nobody; you "explore" alone |
| What do you work on? | Real tasks, even small ones | Data entry unrelated to IT |
| What do you leave with? | Code, a project, a reference letter | A certificate and nothing to show |
| Does it cost you money? | Never | A fee "for training" or "registration" |
An unpaid internship of a few weeks with real work and a supervisor can be worth it. An unpaid internship that runs for months with no learning is unpaid labour. Ask at the interview what a typical week looks like, and ask to speak to a current or past intern.
Build a CV, portfolio and GitHub that get replies
The application that gets a reply shows what you have built, not what you have studied. Everyone applying has the same courses on their transcript.
The one-page CV
- Top third: name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn and GitHub links. No photo needed, no date of birth, no father's name.
- Projects before education. Two or three projects, each with one line on what it does, the tools used, and a link.
- Skills you can defend. If you list React, expect a React question. Five honest skills beat fifteen copied from a job post.
- Education with your degree, university and expected graduation. CGPA if it helps you.
GitHub that someone will actually open
A recruiter spends under a minute on your GitHub. Pin your two best repositories, give each a README with a screenshot, how to run it and what you learned, and delete half-finished tutorial copies. A small project that works is better than a large one that does not. GitHub's student programme also gives verified students free access to many developer tools.
Projects that count
Your final-year project is your strongest asset. Even before it is finished, a clear write-up of the problem and your approach is worth linking. If you have not chosen one yet, see our guides on how to choose a final year project and final year project ideas for computer science.
How to apply and follow up
A good application is short, specific and followed up. Here is the process that works.
- Build proof first. Two projects on GitHub, one of them close to the kind of work the company does.
- Shortlist 15-20 employers. Read what each one builds. A software house that makes WordPress sites and one that builds Python backends want different interns.
- Send a tailored note. Three or four lines: who you are, which internship or area you want, one project that matches their work, and your availability dates. Attach your CV as a PDF named
Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf. - Follow up after about a week. One polite message: "I applied for the web internship on the 3rd and wanted to check whether you are taking interns this term." Then stop.
- Apply in person where you can. For local software houses, visiting with a printed CV and your laptop open to a project still works.
Apply on a company's own form when it has one. A message that ignores the stated process signals you did not read it.
Preparing for the internship interview
Internship interviews test whether you can learn, not whether you already know everything. Expect three kinds of question.
About your own work
"Walk me through this project." Be ready to explain what you built, what you would change and one bug you fixed. If a teammate wrote part of it, say so.
Fundamentals
Basic programming logic, one data structure question, simple SQL, how the web works (what happens when you open a URL), and Git basics. For web roles, HTML, CSS and JavaScript; for Python roles, lists, dictionaries and reading a file.
A small practical task
Many software houses give a short task: fix a page, write a small function, or build something in a day. Do it properly, explain your choices in a short note, and submit on time. A clear, working, modest solution beats an ambitious broken one.
Use AI tools to practise explanations and mock questions, but do not paste AI-written code you cannot explain. Interviewers ask "why did you do it this way?"
Internship in Mardan: what is realistic
There are IT internships in Mardan, but fewer than in Peshawar, Islamabad or Lahore, so students here need to be more deliberate.
- Start with your own campus. Mardan has several universities that teach computing, including Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, the University of Engineering & Technology, Mardan and Women University Mardan. Your department will know which local employers took interns before.
- Go to local software houses directly. Many small firms in the city do not advertise. A visit with a working project often gets further than an email.
- Look at local businesses, not only IT firms. Clinics, schools and traders increasingly need websites, WhatsApp automation and social media. Our survey of Mardan businesses online shows how many still have no website, which is real project work for a student.
- Combine local and remote. A local internship for the reference, plus a remote project for range, is a strong pairing.
Softhat takes interns at its office in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The listings are on our internships page, including AI Automation, Python & AI, Web Designing and UI/UX Design. Most are based at the office with partly remote work open to discussion, and whether an internship is paid and how long it runs are discussed with shortlisted candidates.
Your first weeks as an intern
The first two weeks decide whether you leave with a reference or just a certificate.
- Write everything down. Setup steps, commands, names, who owns what. You will need it again, and it shows you are paying attention.
- Ask good questions. Try for 20-30 minutes first, then ask with what you tried. "I get this error after running X; I checked Y" gets a better answer than "it is not working".
- Finish small things completely. A small fix that is tested and documented builds more trust than three half-done tasks.
- Show your work weekly. A short message to your supervisor on Friday: done, in progress, blocked.
- Ask for feedback before the end, not on the last day. And ask for a reference letter while your work is fresh.
IT internship FAQ
When should I start applying?
About two to three months before you are free: before summer for a summer internship, before your final semester for a placement. Some companies also take interns year-round.
Can first- or second-year students get internships?
It is harder but possible, especially with a portfolio. Earlier students often do better with a small freelance or volunteer project first, then an internship the following year.
Do I need to know AI to get an internship in 2026?
No, but knowing how to use AI tools responsibly in your work helps. Several internships, including ours, now involve AI APIs, automation or AI-assisted search work. See how small businesses use AI agents for what that work looks like.
Is a certificate enough?
No. A certificate says you attended. A project says you can do it. Lead with the project.
Key takeaways
- IT internships come from universities, software houses, government programmes and remote companies; most students only use the first.
- Judge an internship by supervision, real tasks and what you leave with, not only by whether it is paid. Never pay to intern.
- Put projects above education on a one-page CV, and pin two working repositories with clear READMEs.
- Send short, tailored applications to 15-20 employers and follow up once after about a week.
- In Mardan, combine your department's contacts, visits to local software houses and real projects for local businesses.
- In the first weeks, document, ask good questions and finish small tasks completely.
