"Is there any scope of SEO in Pakistan?" is a fair question to ask now. Students hear that AI will replace SEO, freelancers see crowded job boards, and business owners wonder whether anyone still clicks on Google results when an AI answer sits on top.

The short answer: the work is changing shape, not disappearing. Businesses still need to be found, and now they need to be found in AI answers as well as in the blue links. People who can do both are harder to find than people who only know the old checklist.

This guide covers where SEO work exists in Pakistan, how AI Overviews and ChatGPT search change the job, the skills that matter, career paths and progression, how to start with free resources, and an honest look at local versus remote demand, including Mardan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Is there scope of SEO in Pakistan?

Yes. SEO sits inside Pakistan's IT and digital services exports, which are among the country's fastest-growing earners, and it is one of the most common skills sold by Pakistani freelancers.

  • IT exports are growing. ICT export remittances reached US $3.38 billion in July-March FY2026, up 19.7 percent on a year earlier, the highest of any service sector (Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26).
  • Freelancing is a large part of it. Tech freelancer exports reached US $856.3 million in the same nine months, up 51 percent (same source). The survey does not break this down by skill, so nobody can honestly tell you what share is SEO.
  • Training is widespread. DigiSkills.pk, the government's freelancing training programme, has delivered more than 5.14 million trainings (same source). That is good for access, and it also means beginner-level SEO is a crowded market.

That last point is the real story. The scope is wide for people who can show results, and narrow for people who can only list "on-page, off-page, keyword research" on a CV.

Where SEO work exists in Pakistan

SEO jobs in Pakistan fall into four groups. Most people move between them over a career.

Where you work What the work looks like Good for
Digital agencies and software houses Several client sites at once: audits, content plans, local SEO, reports Learning fast across many industries
In-house teams One brand's site in depth: e-commerce, banks, telecoms, education, media Depth, stability, working with developers
Freelancing on platforms Short projects for foreign clients: audits, keyword research, content, links Flexible income, building a client base
Direct remote roles Full-time or long contracts with foreign companies or agencies Higher pay ceilings once you have a track record

Agencies are where most beginners start, because they train juniors and give them variety. In-house roles are growing as Pakistani e-commerce stores, schools and service companies realise that paid ads alone are expensive. Freelancing is where many Pakistani SEOs earn their first foreign income; our guide on freelancing skills for students covers which skills clients actually pay for. Remote roles usually come after a year or two of proven work, when a client or agency abroad hires you directly.

How AI search changes the SEO job

AI search adds new work to SEO rather than replacing it. Google shows AI Overviews and AI Mode above many results, and people also ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, which cite web pages in their answers.

Google says "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode" and that "the best practices for SEO remain relevant" (Google Search Central). So the fundamentals still decide who gets cited: a crawlable, fast site, content that answers real questions, and clear signs of experience and trust.

What changes is the scope of the job:

  • GEO (generative engine optimization): getting your client's pages cited in AI answers, not just ranked in the links.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): structuring content so it gives direct, quotable answers for featured snippets, voice and AI summaries.
  • Crawler control: knowing which bots power AI search and which only collect training data. OpenAI, for example, documents that a site can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search while blocking GPTBot (OpenAI).
  • Different measurement: fewer clicks for simple questions, so SEOs must report on visibility, citations, leads and calls, not only traffic.

We explain the mechanics in Google AI Overviews and your SEO and in SEO for AI search engines. For a career, the point is simple: an SEO who understands AI search is worth more in 2026 than one who does not.

Skills an SEO needs now

SEO employers in Pakistan look for a mix of technical, content and business skills. You do not need all of them on day one, but you need a plan to cover them.

Skill area What to learn Why it matters
Technical SEO Crawling, indexing, site speed, Core Web Vitals, redirects, structured data Nothing ranks or gets cited if Google cannot read the site
Content and keywords Search intent, keyword research, briefs, editing, topical coverage Most SEO results come from better pages
Local SEO Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, location pages Most Pakistani small businesses need local customers
AI search (GEO/AEO) Answer-first writing, entities, AI crawlers, citation tracking The newest part of the job, with the fewest experienced people
Data and reporting Search Console, GA4, spreadsheets, clear monthly reports Clients keep paying for results they can see
Communication Plain-English writing, client calls, explaining trade-offs The skill that separates seniors from juniors

Basic HTML, WordPress and using AI tools well, with a human checking the output, help a lot.

SEO career paths and progression

A typical SEO career in Pakistan moves from doing tasks, to owning results, to leading strategy. Titles vary by company, but the steps look like this.

SEO career ladder from intern or trainee to SEO executive, SEO specialist, senior SEO or team lead, and then head of SEO, consultant or agency owner, with AI search skills running across every level
The usual SEO career ladder. AI search skills now matter at every step.
  1. Intern or trainee (first months): keyword research, on-page fixes, content uploads, reporting support, all checked by someone senior.
  2. SEO executive (year 1-2): owns tasks on a few client sites, writes briefs, does local SEO and basic audits.
  3. SEO specialist (year 2-4): owns results for sites, handles technical audits, content strategy and client reporting.
  4. Senior SEO or team lead (year 4+): sets strategy, trains juniors, works with developers and content teams, handles bigger accounts.
  5. Head of SEO, consultant or agency owner: sells and leads SEO for a business or for many clients.

Side moves are common too: into content strategy, Google Ads and paid search, web analytics, or product roles. Many Pakistani SEOs also run a small freelance practice alongside a job.

How to start an SEO career

Start by learning the basics from free official sources, then prove you can apply them on a real site. A portfolio beats a certificate list.

  1. Learn the fundamentals from Google. The SEO Starter Guide and the rest of Google Search Central documentation are free and written by the search engine itself.
  2. Earn free Google certifications. Skillshop's foundational certifications, such as Google Analytics and Google Ads, "continue to be available free of charge" (Skillshop Help). They show you can measure results. They are not SEO certifications, and employers know it.
  3. Build a site you control. A blog or a site for a family business or local shop. Connect Search Console, publish useful pages and track what happens over three to six months.
  4. Document two or three case studies. What was wrong, what you changed, and what moved: impressions, rankings, calls or leads. Screenshots from Search Console make it credible.
  5. Get inside a team. An internship teaches more in three months than a year alone. Our guide on how to get an IT internship in Pakistan explains how.
  6. Take a structured course if you want speed. Our SEO, GEO & AEO course covers classic SEO together with AI search optimization, using real sites.

Avoid shortcuts such as buying links, spinning content or promising clients "page one in a week". Google's own guide on hiring an SEO warns businesses about exactly these promises, and clients increasingly read it.

Local vs remote demand, including Mardan and KPK

Most local SEO jobs are in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad-Rawalpindi, where agencies and in-house marketing teams are concentrated. Remote work and freelancing are what make SEO a realistic career from smaller cities.

What demand looks like outside the big cities

In Mardan and much of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa there are fewer agencies and fewer advertised SEO jobs. But local businesses are a growing market: clinics, schools, marble and construction firms, shops and restaurants that want to appear on Google Maps and in local results. Our local SEO guide for Mardan businesses shows what that work looks like.

An honest plan if you live in KPK

  • Use remote work and freelancing for foreign income, with a reliable internet connection and power backup.
  • Use local businesses for case studies and steady smaller projects. A real local result is a strong portfolio piece.
  • Consider one or two years in a bigger city or a strong remote team early on, to learn from experienced SEOs.

Scope of SEO FAQ

Will AI replace SEO jobs?

AI is replacing some routine SEO tasks, such as writing basic meta descriptions or first-draft outlines. It is not replacing the judgement: deciding what a business should publish, fixing technical problems, earning trust and getting cited in AI answers. Google itself says SEO best practices remain relevant for its AI features (Google Search Central).

Do I need a degree to work in SEO?

No specific degree is required. Agencies and clients care more about results you can show. A degree in computer science, marketing or English helps with the technical, business or writing side.

Is SEO better for freelancing or a job?

For most beginners, a job or internship first, then freelancing. A team teaches you processes and gives you real results to show, which makes winning foreign clients much easier.

Key takeaways

  • The scope of SEO in Pakistan is real: it sits inside growing IT exports and freelancing, but the beginner market is crowded.
  • SEO work exists in agencies, in-house teams, freelancing and direct remote roles; most careers move between them.
  • AI search adds GEO and AEO to the job. Google says SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Build technical, content, local, AI search and reporting skills, and learn to explain results clearly.
  • Start with Google's free documentation and Skillshop certifications, then prove yourself with a real site and case studies.
  • From Mardan or elsewhere in KPK, combine remote work with local business projects to build a strong portfolio.
