Worked examples
How the numbers are worked out
GPA = Σ (credit hours × grade points) ÷ Σ credit hours. CGPA uses the same formula across all semesters. This is the formula in HEC's semester-system guidelines and in each university rulebook listed below.
Semester GPA, Punjab University (PU's own example)
- Five 3-credit courses graded B (3.00), C+ (2.30), A (4.00), A- (3.70) and F (0.00).
- Quality points: 9.00 + 6.90 + 12.00 + 11.10 + 0.00 = 39.00.
- GPA = 39.00 ÷ 15 credit hours = 2.60.
Semester GPA from marks, University of Peshawar (UoP's own example)
- 65%, 72%, 80%, 51% and 42% in courses of 3, 3, 3, 2 and 3 credit hours.
- Grade points from the UoP table: 2.4, 3.0, 3.5, 1.1 and 0.0.
- Quality points: 7.2 + 9.0 + 10.5 + 2.2 + 0 = 28.9. GPA = 28.9 ÷ 14 = 2.064, reported as 2.06.
CGPA from three semesters
- Semester GPAs 3.20 (18 credit hours), 2.80 (17) and 3.50 (18).
- 3.20 × 18 + 2.80 × 17 + 3.50 × 18 = 57.6 + 47.6 + 63.0 = 168.2.
- CGPA = 168.2 ÷ 53 = 3.17.
CGPA to percentage on HEC's table (HEC's own example)
- CGPA 3.00 falls in band B: 2.67–3.00, which is 71–74%.
- HEC gives a CGPA the minimum percentage of its band, so 3.00 = 71%.
- Likewise 3.50 is in band A- (3.34–3.66, 80–84%), so it equals 80%.

FAQ
Questions about GPA and CGPA
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, add them up, and divide by the total credit hours. For example, A (4.00) in a 3-credit course and B (3.00) in a 2-credit course: (12 + 6) ÷ 5 = 3.60. This is the formula in HEC's semester-system guidelines and in every university rulebook we checked.
How is CGPA calculated from semester GPAs?
Multiply each semester's GPA by that semester's credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credit hours. A plain average of GPAs is only correct when every semester has the same credit hours.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage according to HEC?
HEC's fractionalized grading table places each CGPA in a grade band, and the CGPA gets the minimum percentage of that band. For example, CGPA 3.00 is in band B (2.67–3.00, 71–74%), so it equals 71%; CGPA 3.50 is in band A- (3.34–3.66, 80–84%), so it equals 80%.
Is there one official CGPA to percentage formula in Pakistan?
No. HEC recommends the band table this calculator uses, but universities can follow their own rules, and the percentage on your transcript or degree is what counts. None of the university rulebooks we checked (AWKUM, University of Peshawar, Punjab University, UET Peshawar, UET Mardan, NUST, FAST) publishes its own CGPA-to-percentage formula, so for anything official ask your university's examination section.
Why can't I enter marks for UET, NUST or FAST?
These universities use relative grading: your marks are compared with the class before a letter grade is given, so the same percentage can earn different grades in different classes. Their rules fix only the points for each letter grade, so enter the letter grade from your result.
What CGPA do I need to get my degree?
HEC's minimum is a CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.00 for a BS degree and 2.50 for MS/MPhil. Some programmes ask for more, for example NUST requires 2.50 in its Business and Social Sciences programmes.
